Barack Obama is a zealous believer in the imperialist capitalist system imposed by the United States to the world. “God bless the United States,” is the final phrase of his speeches.
Some events hurt the sensitivity of the world public which sympathized with the victory of the African-American over the far-right candidate in that country. On the basis of one of the deepest economic crises the world has known, and on the pain brought on by the young Americans who lost their lives or were injured or maimed in the genocidal wars of conquest unleashed by his predecessor, he won with the vote of the majority of the 50% of Americans who cast a vote in that democratic nation.
Out of an elementary sense of ethic, Obama should have refrained from accepting the Nobel Peace Prize when he had already decided on sending forty thousand troops to an absurd war in the heart of Asia.
The warmongering policy and the plundering of natural resources, as well as the unequal terms of trade of the current administration toward the poor countries of the Third World are no different from those of his predecessors, most of them from the far-right, --with few exceptions—throughout the past century.
The antidemocratic document imposed at the Copenhagen Summit on the international community, which had given credit to his promise to cooperate in the struggle against climate change, was another one of those events that disappointed many people around the world. The United States, the largest producer of greenhouse-gas emissions, was not willing to make the necessary sacrifices despite the flattering previous words of its president.
The list of contradictions would be endless between the ideas defended by the Cuban nation for five decades with great sacrifices and the selfish policies of that colossal empire.
Still, we don’t feel any animosity toward Obama, much less toward the American people. We feel that the Healthcare Reform has been a significant battle and a success of his administration. However, it is really amazing that 234 years after the Declaration of Independence proclaimed in Philadelphia in the year 1776, which drew inspiration from the ideas of the great French encyclopedists, the government of that country has approved medical care for the overwhelming majority of its citizens, something that Cuba accomplished for its entire population half a century ago despite the cruel and inhuman blockade imposed --and still in force-- by the mightiest country that has ever existed. In the past, it was only after almost a century of independence and following a bloody war, that Abraham Lincoln could obtain the legal emancipation of the slaves.
On the other hand, I can’t help but think of a world where over one-third of the population have no access to medical care or the basic medicines required to ensure health. And this situation will be aggravated as climate change, and water and food shortage worsen in a globalized world where the population grows, the forests disappear, the arable land decreases, the air is more polluted, and the human species inhabiting it –which emerged less than 200 thousand years back, that is, 3.5 billion years after the first forms of life on the planet—is running the real risk of annihilation.
Even conceding that the Health Reform comes as a success to the Obama administration, the current President of the United States cannot ignore that climate change poses a threat to health, and worse still, to the very existence of every nation in the world, as the rise in temperature –beyond critical limits which are already in sight—melts down the water of the glaciers, and the tens of millions of cubic meters contained in the enormous ice caps of the Antarctic, Greenland and Siberia melt down within a few decades leaving under water every port facility in the world and lands where a large part of the world population lives, works and eats today.
Obama, the leaders of the wealthy nations and their allies, as well as their scientists and sophisticated research centers are aware of this; they cannot ignore it.
I understand the satisfaction expressed in the presidential speech and his recognition of the contribution made by the members of Congress and the administration to make possible the miracle of the Health Reform, which strengthens the government’s position vis-à-vis political lobbyists and mercenaries that curtail the authority of the administration. It would be worse if those responsible for tortures, murders on contract and genocide were in charge of the US government again. As a man unquestionably smart and sufficiently well informed, Obama knows there is no exaggeration in my words. I hope the foolish remarks he sometimes makes about Cuba do not cloud his mind.
In the aftermath of his success in this battle for the right of every American to healthcare, 12 million immigrants, most of them Latin American, Haitian and from other Caribbean countries are demanding the legalization of their presence in the United States where they do the hardest work and the American society cannot do without them, but where they are arrested, separated from their families and sent back to their countries.
The overwhelming majority migrated to America escaping the tyrannies imposed by the United States on the countries of the region and the dire poverty these have endured as a result of the plundering of their resources and the unequal terms of trade. Their family remittances make up a high percentage of the GDP of these countries’ economies. Now, they expect an act of basic justice. If the Cubans have been singled out with an Adjustment Act which promotes brain drain and the enticement of their educated youths, why are such brutal methods applied to the illegal immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean?
The devastating earthquake that battered Haiti –the poorest nation in Latin America, hammered by an unprecedented natural catastrophe that took the lives of more than 200 thousand people—and the terrible economic damage that a similar phenomenon brought on Chile are eloquent proof of the dangers looming over the so-called civilization and of the need for dramatic measures that can give the human species the hope to survive.
The Cold War failed to benefit the people of the world. The huge economic, technological and scientific power of the United States would be unable to survive the tragedy hovering on the planet. President Obama should look up in a computer the relevant data and talk to his most outstanding scientists; then, he will see how far his country is of being the model it promotes for humanity.
As an African-American, he suffered the offense of discrimination, according to his own narrative in the book “Dreams From My Father.” He was acquainted with the poverty of tens of millions of Americans; educated in that country and as a successful professional he has enjoyed the privileges of the rich middle class and ended up idealizing the social system where the economic crisis, the lives of Americans uselessly sacrificed and his undisputable political talent gave him political victory.
Yet, to the most intractable right-wing Obama is an extremist; and they threaten to continue fighting in the Senate to neutralize the effects of the Health Reform and to openly boycott it in several States of the Union by declaring it an unconstitutional law.
The problems of our times are much more serious.
The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other international financial institutions strictly controlled by the United States –the creators of tax havens and the culprits of the financial chaos in the planet-- allow the bailout of the big American banks by their government every time one of the frequent and increasingly intense crises of the system hits that country.
The United States Federal Reserve capriciously mints the hard currency that pays for the wars of conquest, the profits of the Military Industrial Complex, the military bases distributed around the world, and the large investments used by the transnational companies to control the economy of many countries worldwide. Nixon unilaterally suspended the gold standard while the vaults of the New York banks keep seven thousand tons of gold, little over 25% of the world reserves in that metal, a figure that at the end of World War II was in excess of 80%. It is said that the US public debt exceeds 10 trillion dollars, which is more than 70% of its GDP and stands like a burden for the new generations. This is said when the truth is that the world economy is the one paying that debt with the huge amounts of US dollars spent in purchasing goods and services, the same dollars that the large transnationals of that country use to buy a considerable portion of the world riches and to sustain that nation’s consumer society.
Anyone understands that such a system is unsustainable and also why the wealthiest sectors in the United States and their allies in the world advocate a system that can only be sustained with ignorance, deception and the conditioned reflexes created in the world public through the monopoly over the mass media, including the main networks of the Internet.
Today, the structure is crumbling with the accelerated advance of climate change and its disastrous consequences which are placing humanity face to face with an exceptional dilemma.
The wars between powers seem no longer a possible solution to the great contradictions as they were until the second half of the 20th century. Still, they have had such an impact on the elements that make human survival possible, that they could prematurely put an end to the existence of the current intelligent species that populates our planet.
A few days ago I expressed my firm belief that, in light of the scientific knowledge prevailing today, the human beings will have to solve their problems on planet Earth since they will never be able to cover the distance separating the Sun from its closest star located four light-years away, –one light-year equals 187,500 miles per second, as our high school students know—provided a planet similar to our beautiful Earth existed around that sun.
The United States invests huge amounts of money to confirm the presence of water on planet Mars, or if there was or is any elementary form of life there. No one knows what for, if not out of mere scientific curiosity. Millions of species are disappearing from our planet at a faster pace and its enormous water sources are constantly being poisoned.
The new laws of science –following Einstein’s formulas on energy and matter, and the big-bang theory as the origin of the millions of constellations and infinite stars and/or other theories—have given rise to deep changes in such basic concepts as space and time, which draw the attention of and are subjected to analysis by theologians. One of them, our Brazilian friend Friar Betto, deals with the subject in his book “The Work of the Artist: A Holistic Vision of Universe,” presented in the recent International Book Fair held in Havana.
The advancement of science in the past one hundred years has had an impact on the traditional approaches that prevailed through thousands of years in social sciences and even in Philosophy and Theology.
The most honest thinkers are paying significant attention to the new knowledge but we know absolutely nothing of how President Obama feels about the compatibility of consumer societies with science.
In the meantime, it is worthwhile meditating about these subjects now and then; this will certainly not prevent human beings from dreaming and from taking things with due serenity and steely nerves, but it is the duty of at least those who chose to become politicians and who sustain the noble and unwavering objective of a human society where justice and solidarity prevail.

LA REFORMA SANITARIA DE ESTADOS UNIDOS
Barack Obama es un fanático creyente del sistema capitalista imperialista impuesto por Estados Unidos al mundo. “Dios bendiga a Estados Unidos”, concluye sus discursos.
Algunos de sus hechos hirieron la sensibilidad de la opinión mundial, que vio con simpatías la victoria del ciudadano afroamericano frente al candidato de la extrema derecha de ese país. Apoyándose en una de las más profundas crisis económicas que ha conocido el mundo, y en el dolor causado por los jóvenes norteamericanos que perdieron la vida o fueron heridos o mutilados en las guerras genocidas de conquista de su predecesor, obtuvo los votos de la mayoría del 50% de los norteamericanos que se dignan acudir a las urnas en ese democrático país.
Por elemental sentido ético, Obama debió abstenerse de aceptar el Premio Nobel de la Paz, cuando ya había decidido el envío de cuarenta mil soldados a una guerra absurda en el corazón de Asia.
La política militarista, el saqueo de los recursos naturales, el intercambio desigual de la actual administración con los países pobres del Tercer Mundo, en nada se diferencia de la de sus antecesores, casi todos de extrema derecha, con algunas excepciones, a lo largo del pasado siglo.
El documento antidemocrático impuesto en la Cumbre de Copenhague a la comunidad internacional ¬―que había dado crédito a su promesa de cooperar en la lucha contra el cambio climático― fue otro de los hechos que desilusionaron a muchas personas en el mundo. Estados Unidos, el mayor emisor de gases de efecto invernadero, no estaba dispuesto a realizar los sacrificios necesarios a pesar de las palabras zalameras previas de su Presidente.
Sería interminable la lista de contradicciones entre las ideas que la nación cubana ha defendido con grandes sacrificios durante medio siglo y la política egoísta de ese colosal imperio.
A pesar de eso, no albergamos ninguna animadversión contra Obama, y mucho menos contra el pueblo de Estados Unidos. Consideramos que la Reforma de Salud ha constituido una importante batalla y un éxito de su gobierno. Parece sin embargo algo realmente insólito que 234 años después de la Declaración de Independencia, en Filadelfia en el año 1776, inspirada en las ideas de los enciclopedistas franceses, el gobierno de ese país haya aprobado la atención médica para la inmensa mayoría de sus ciudadanos, algo que Cuba alcanzó para toda su población hace medio siglo a pesar del cruel e inhumano bloqueo impuesto y todavía vigente por parte del país más poderoso que existió jamás. Antes, después de casi un siglo de independencia y tras sangrienta guerra, Abraham Lincoln pudo lograr la libertad legal de los esclavos.
No puedo, por otro lado, dejar de pensar en un mundo donde más de un tercio de la población carece de atención médica y de medicamentos esenciales para garantizar la salud, situación que se agravará en la medida en que el cambio climático, la escasez de agua y de alimentos sean cada vez mayores, en un mundo globalizado donde la población crece, los bosques desaparecen, la tierra agrícola disminuye, el aire se hace irrespirable, y la especie humana que lo habita ―que emergió hace menos de 200 mil años, es decir 3 500 millones de años después que surgieron las primeras formas de vida en el planeta― corre el riesgo real de desaparecer como especie.
Admitiendo que la reforma sanitaria significa un éxito para el gobierno de Obama, el actual Presidente de Estados Unidos no puede ignorar que el cambio climático significa una amenaza para la salud y, peor todavía, para la propia existencia de todas las naciones del mundo, cuando el aumento de la temperatura –más allá de límites críticos que están a la vista– diluya las aguas congeladas de los glaciares, y las decenas de millones de kilómetros cúbicos almacenados en las enormes capas de hielo acumuladas en la Antártida, Groenlandia y Siberia se derritan en unas pocas decenas de años, dejando bajo las aguas todas las instalaciones portuarias del mundo y las tierras donde hoy vive, se alimenta y labora una gran parte de la población mundial.
Obama, los líderes de los países ricos y sus aliados, sus científicos y sus centros sofisticados de investigación conocen esto; es imposible que lo ignoren.
Comprendo la satisfacción con que se expresa y reconoce, en el discurso presidencial, el aporte de los miembros del Congreso y la administración que hicieron posible el milagro de la reforma sanitaria, lo cual fortalece la posición del gobierno frente a lobbistas y mercenarios de la política que limitan las facultades de la administración. Sería peor si los que protagonizaron las torturas, los asesinatos por contrato y el genocidio ocuparan nuevamente el gobierno de Estados Unidos. Como persona incuestionablemente inteligente y suficientemente bien informada, Obama conoce que no hay exageración en mis palabras. Espero que las tonterías que a veces expresa sobre Cuba no obnubilen su inteligencia.
Tras el éxito en esta batalla por el derecho a la salud de todos los norteamericanos, 12 millones de inmigrantes, en su inmensa mayoría latinoamericanos, haitianos y de otros países del Caribe reclaman la legalización de su presencia en Estados Unidos, donde realizan los trabajos más duros y de los cuales no puede prescindir la sociedad norteamericana, en la que son arrestados, separados de sus familiares y remitidos a sus países.
La inmensa mayoría emigraron a Norteamérica como consecuencia de las tiranías impuestas por Estados Unidos a los países del área y la brutal pobreza a que han sido sometidos como consecuencia del saqueo de sus recursos y el intercambio desigual. Sus remesas familiares constituyen un elevado porcentaje del PIB de sus economías. Esperan ahora un acto de elemental justicia. Si al pueblo cubano se le impuso una Ley de Ajuste, que promueve el robo de cerebros y el despojo de sus jóvenes instruidos, ¿por qué se emplean métodos tan brutales con los emigrantes ilegales de los países latinoamericanos y caribeños?
El devastador terremoto que azotó a Haití –el país más pobre de América Latina, que acaba de sufrir una catástrofe natural sin precedentes que implicó la muerte de más de 200 mil personas– y el terrible daño económico que otro fenómeno similar ocasionó a Chile, son pruebas elocuentes de los peligros que amenazan a la llamada civilización y la necesidad de drásticas medidas que otorguen a la especie humana la esperanza de sobrevivir.
La Guerra Fría no trajo ningún beneficio para la población mundial. El inmenso poder económico, tecnológico y científico de Estados Unidos no podría sobrevivir a la tragedia que se cierne sobre el planeta. El presidente Obama debe buscar en su computadora los datos pertinentes y conversar con sus científicos más eminentes; verá cuán lejos está su país de ser el modelo que preconiza para la humanidad.
Por su condición de afroamericano, allí sufrió las afrentas de la discriminación, según narra en su libro “Los sueños de mi padre”; allí conoció la pobreza en que viven decenas de millones de norteamericanos; allí se educó, pero allí también disfrutó como profesional exitoso los privilegios de la clase media rica, y terminó idealizando el sistema social donde la crisis económica, las vidas de norteamericanos inútilmente sacrificadas y su indiscutible talento político le dieron la victoria electoral.
A pesar de eso, para la derecha más recalcitrante Obama es un extremista al que amenazan con seguir dando la batalla en el Senado para neutralizar los efectos de la reforma sanitaria y sabotearla abiertamente en varios Estados de la Unión, declarando inconstitucional la Ley aprobada.
Los problemas de nuestra época son todavía mucho más graves.
El Fondo Monetario Internacional, el Banco Mundial y otros organismos internacionales de créditos, bajo control estricto de Estados Unidos, permiten que los grandes bancos norteamericanos ―creadores de los paraísos fiscales y responsables del caos financiero en el planeta― sean sacados a flote por los gobiernos de ese país en cada una de las frecuentes y crecientes crisis del sistema.
La Reserva Federal de Estados Unidos emite a su antojo las divisas convertibles que costean las guerras de conquista, las ganancias del Complejo Militar Industrial, las bases militares distribuidas por el mundo y las grandes inversiones con las que las transnacionales controlan la economía en muchos países del mundo. Nixon suspendió unilateralmente la conversión del dólar en oro, mientras en las bóvedas de los bancos de Nueva York se guardan siete mil toneladas de oro, algo más del 25% de las reservas mundiales de ese metal, cifra que al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial superaba el 80%. Se argumenta que la deuda pública sobrepasa los 10 millones de millones de dólares, lo cual supera el 70% de su PIB, como una carga que se transfiere a las nuevas generaciones. Eso se afirma cuando en realidad es la economía mundial la que costea esa deuda con los enormes gastos en bienes y servicios que aporta para adquirir dólares norteamericanos, con los cuales las grandes transnacionales de ese país se han apoderado de una parte considerable de las riquezas del mundo, y sostienen la sociedad de consumo de esa nación.
Cualquiera comprende que tal sistema es insostenible, y por qué los sectores más ricos en Estados Unidos y sus aliados en el mundo defienden un sistema sólo sustentable con la ignorancia, las mentiras y los reflejos condicionados sembrados en la opinión mundial a través del monopolio de los medios de comunicación masiva, incluidas las redes principales de Internet.
Hoy el andamiaje se derrumba ante el avance acelerado del cambio climático y sus funestas consecuencias, que ponen a la humanidad ante un dilema excepcional.
Las guerras entre las potencias no parecen ser ya la solución posible a las grandes contradicciones, como lo fueron hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XX; pero, a su vez, han incidido de tal forma sobre los factores que hacen posible la supervivencia humana, que pueden poner fin prematuramente a la existencia de la actual especie inteligente que habita nuestro planeta.
Hace unos días expresé mi convicción de que, a la luz de los conocimientos científicos que hoy se dominan, el ser humano deberá resolver sus problemas en el planeta Tierra, ya que jamás podrá recorrer la distancia que separa el Sol de la estrella más próxima, ubicada a cuatro años luz, velocidad que equivale a 300 mil kilómetros por segundo ―como conocen nuestros alumnos de secundaria básica―, si alrededor de ese sol existiera un planeta parecido a nuestra bella Tierra.
Estados Unidos invierte fabulosas sumas para comprobar si en el planeta Marte hay agua, y si existió o existe alguna forma elemental de vida. Nadie sabe para qué, como no sea por pura curiosidad científica. Millones de especies van desapareciendo a ritmo creciente en nuestro planeta y sus fabulosas cantidades de agua constantemente se están envenenando.
Las nuevas leyes de la ciencia ―a partir de las fórmulas de Einstein sobre la energía y la materia, y la teoría de la gran explosión como origen de los millones de constelaciones e infinitas estrellas u otras hipótesis― han dado lugar a profundos cambios en conceptos fundamentales como el espacio y el tiempo, que ocupan la atención y los análisis de los teólogos. Uno de ellos, nuestro amigo brasileño Frei Betto, aborda el tema en su libro “La obra del artista: Una visión holística del Universo”, presentado en la última Feria Internacional del Libro de La Habana.
Los avances de la ciencia en los últimos cien años han impactado los enfoques tradicionales que prevalecieron a lo largo de miles de años en las ciencias sociales e incluso en la Filosofía y la Teología.
No es poco el interés que los más honestos pensadores prestan a los nuevos conocimientos, pero no sabemos absolutamente nada de lo que piensa el presidente Obama sobre la compatibilidad de las sociedades de consumo y la ciencia.
Mientras tanto, vale la pena dedicarse de vez en cuando a meditar sobre esos temas. Con seguridad no dejará por ello de soñar el ser humano y tomar las cosas con la debida serenidad y acerados nervios. Es el deber, al menos, de aquellos que escogieron el oficio de políticos y el noble e irrenunciable propósito de una sociedad humana solidaria y justa.
